Helping Others

Today We Read the Story "The Little Red Hen"
Each of the children picked a farm animal puppet to be, and we acted out the story. "Not I said the"..... was fun to repeat, each time the little red hen asked for help.
Pictures of the story were colored and then glued into sequence order.
Last but not least we all went home with RED hands after we stamped our hands to make a fun hen on the outside of an envelope full of pictures of ways we can help others. Hopefully each time we see the little red hen, we can be reminded to help others.
In honor of the Little Red Hen, we had bread and jam for our snack.
#10 was the number for the day. We made a paper doll chain with 10 children. We put faces and colored clothing onto them. Afterwards we learned to do a DOT-TO-DOT with finding the numbers 1-10. During Singing time, we sang "One little, Two little, Three little Friends"

I'm Your Friend

Since it was Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, we talked about him, and his message to be friends with everyone, even if they are different. We looked at pictures of different boys and girls all over the world. Some had different color of eyes, hair and skin. Some wore glasses, different clothing and some even had wheelchairs. We learned that it is important to be friendly to everyone, no matter what they looked liked. We read a book called "The Bully" and decided that it was not fun to be a bully or have a bully in school. We made "Friendship Necklaces" with small pictures of the children in our class. We have been using a lot of our fine motor skills, like lacing different lengths of beads, and rolling and pinching modeling clay. This is helping us to use a pencil correctly so we can practice writing our names and letters.
For the #9, we colored, then cut out a pig to make a "Piggy Bank" to hold nine coins in. We matched the coin with the number of dots that were glued to the back of our pigs. We have been practicing counting things and matching the number with it. We are starting to see the number dots and quickly recognize what number it is without counting them. Playing with dice is a great way to practice counting and number recognition.
Last of all today, we practiced printing our name on a fun "wipe" board, that we got to take home. With a washable marker and wet wipe or damp paper towel, we can practice printing our names daily!

Staying Healthy

Going to the doctors for check-ups is a way we can stay healthy. We learned that sometimes, we go to the doctor, even if we are not sick.
Today we watched Elmo's World and learned that exercising is also important for our bodies to stay healthy. We also need to keep our bodies clean by taking baths, brushing our hair, and teeth. We took home a "Good Health Chart", so we can keep track of the days that we take good care of ourselves.
The number today was 8. After we colored a number 8 worksheet, we got to use Modeling Clay to make a spider with 8 legs. We placed our spider in a jar, for safe keeping. Our spider should harden in a day or two and then we will be able to play with it!

Taking Care Of Ourselves

We Can Eat Healthy

Today we talked about healthy foods to eat. We learned what was a snack and what was "Healthy Food" The Story "Showdown at the Food Pyramid", introduced the Food Pyramid. We categorized the different groups into grains, milks, fruits and Vegetables, and meats. We played a "Lunch" game, where each child who had received the "lunch plate" had to say something healthy to eat for lunch, that had not been already mentioned. We put together a "Veggie" man, and ate Apples and Oranges for our snack.

#7 was the number we focused on today. There are 7 days in a week. We learned the "week" song (maybe they kinda sang it to you?)

Snow Is Falling!!

Perfect time to talk about Winter!! We shared stories and ideas of things we can do during winter, and outside playing in the snow. Fun stories were read, "The Snow Day",and "All You Need For A Snowman".
The children were excited to make their own snowman with cotton, glue, paper, and a white crayon. After making snowmans, we thought hot chocolate and cookies would be an apporiate snack for winter time play. We also learned the importance of dressing for winter cold. The funny book, "A Hat For Minerva Louise" brought lots of laughter as we read about a chicken who tries to find something warm to wear, so she could go out in the snow.
Number Six was the number we talked about today. All children were given a 6 squared game card. We first put 6 sequence cards of how to build a snowman, in the correct order, then in the correct box 1-6. Each of the children received a die. Again we practiced our dot recognition with numbers by rolling the die and placing the die with the correct number. This is an excellent game the children can play by themselves.
We ended our day with fun action songs about building a snowman, and getting the right clothing on to play out in the snow.

Happy New Year!!

Happy New Year!!
We had a some what New Year's Party to celebrate our coming back to preschool, after our Christmas break. We decorated a party hat with colorful markers, seeds, sequence, and tinsel. We even ate "New Year" snacks of, cheese and crackers, chex party mix, and holiday punch.
Today we reviewed numbers 1-5 and learned out to match Numbers with dots. I think the children are ready for Dot to Dots!
The children liked making a 5 pointed star wand, that they tried coloring the right amount of dots next to each number.
We ended our day with a fun and entertaining book called, "Bad Dog Marley" by, John Grogan. This story is taken from the movie, "Marley and Me". Some the children had already seen the movie and were very excited to know already know who Marley was.
Over all this was a fun day, with crafts, counting dots, and a game called 5 balls in a basket.
